Drawing Basics

Have you always wanted to draw but don’t know where to start? Explore your creativity in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere as you learn about drawing materials, shading, tones and textures, different drawing styles, composition, perspective and much more. Each session will start with warm-up drawing exercises designed to observe and sharpen the mind and help you to loosen up and have fun as you learn. Your confidence will increase by keeping a Visual Art Journal and you will also have an opportunity to experiment with basic pastel painting techniques. All levels welcome.


You will investigate a variety of drawing techniques and learn to communicate your ideas visually and effectively.

Topics covered:

  • Drawing materials and how to use them.
  • Exploring shading, tones and textures.
  • Experimenting with different drawing styles.
  • Composition – the key element to a good drawing.
  • Perspective – creating the correct effect.
  • Drawing indoors and outdoors.

Outcomes/ Benefits

At the conclusion of this course you will be able to communicate your ideas visually and effectively as you apply the basic elements of drawing using a variety of drawing techniques, media and materials.

What To Bring

  • A4 sketchbook.
  • Pencils – 2B, 4B & 6B.
  • Eraser.
  • Your tutor will advise on any other materials you will need throughout this course.
