Watercolours/Drawing

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Gain an appreciation for tone, colour and composition as you work with this beautiful medium and/or learn the basic principals of drawing. This course is designed to take beginners through a series of painting exercises that will naturally progress to landscapes, flowers and birds, or build on your current skills if you are a more advanced student. If drawing is your preferred method your tutor will assist you in portraying these subjects using pencils. Beginners to advanced students are all welcome.

Content

You will learn about preparation and use of materials, useful tools and basic techniques.
You may enrol in any term and depending on your skill level you will progress through each term in this sequence:


Beginner Students

  • Preparation and various uses of equipment, materials and tools.
  • Demonstration and practice of different techniques, including marbled blobs, stormy landscape and daisies.

Intermediate Students

  • Expand on skills you have already learnt.
  • Subjects that will be painted include a bird and poppies.
  • New techniques: pen and wash, charcoal and wash, painting on black paper, using gold leaf and gold pen.

Advanced Students

  • Learn how to tackle subjects such as a single flower, animals, tree in mist, seashells, portraits, seascapes or any other subject of your choice.

Outcomes/ Benefits

On completion of your first term you will be confident in the use of watercolour materials and be able to produce a watercolour painting to be proud of. Continuation of this course will allow you to expand on these techniques, become more proficient in your painting skills and extend your subject range.

What To Bring

If you intend to draw only please bring:

  • A4 drawing pad or loose A4 paper.
  • 2B pencil and kneadable/pliable eraser (kneadable rubber available at Newsagents).
  • Approx 40cm X 50cm, 3-4mm thick craftwood (MDF) or ply or if you would like to purchase from tutor at a cost of $10 (includes handle) please state this at time of enrolment.
  • Masking tape (20 – 25mm) to adhere paper to board.

Other requirements will be discussed in the first session.
If you intend to paint please bring:

  • 2B pencil and kneadable/pliable eraser (kneadable rubber available at Newsagents).
  • One sheet 300gram Archer’s rough paper, cut into 4 – do not roll.
  • Approx 40cm X 50cm, 3-4mm thick craftwood (MDF) or ply or if you would like to purchase from tutor at a cost of $10 (includes handle) please state this at time of enrolment.
  • Masking tape (20 – 25mm) to adhere paper to board (Stretching Tape will be explained later).
  • Paints (miniumum required session 1 & 2) Art Spectrum brand – Spectrum Red, Spectrum Yellow, Spectrum Blue (if buying another brand the equivalent colours would be Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and Cobalt Blue) and Paynes Grey or any watecolour paints you already have (available at art supply shops – any queries please phone the College for tutor’s contact details).
  • Complete range of paint colours for further exercises will be advised on Day 1.
  • Palette: recommend bowl shape with 6 deep sections or empty ice cube trays.
  • Masking fluid.
  • Brushes: Bring any soft brushes you have at home and tutor will advise first lesson.
  • Box of tissues and small soft rags (towelling recommended).
  • Two small shallow plastic dishes for water eg. empty margarine/butter containers.
  • Old 1.25 litre empty soft drink bottle and large container for dirty water.
  • You may bring any other watercolour equipment you already have.

  • Tea and coffee can be purchased at a small cost.
